H.E. Ambassador Schoenaich-Carolath is particularly committed to the fight against Human Trafficking. This globally relevant crime is responsible for the inconceivable suffering of trafficked persons and has already reached a volume of well over USD 150 million worldwide.
At conferences and meetings, Ambassador Schoenaich-Carolath constantly points out the devastating effects of global Human Trafficking and emphasises the urgent need for international cooperation to combat this crime. He emphasises that the Order of Malta’s commitment as a neutral and independent organisation is highly recognised internationally because its sole focus is to provide effective assistance to trafficked persons without pursuing national or economic interests. Furthermore, all aid provided by the Order of Malta is provided regardless of the religious affiliation or origin of those in need – a principle that has applied since the first hospital was founded in Jerusalem in 1048.
In Austria, which is also affected by human trafficking due to its geographical position and history, Ambassador Schoenaich-Carolath has succeeded in setting up a monitoring centre together with the Archdiocese of Salzburg in order to observe the current situation and developments in the field of human trafficking in Austria and to be able to take appropriate initiatives.
Further details on the topic will be published in the course of the year.
