The topic of global Human Trafficking was discussed at IHC2025, the International Hospitaller’s Conference, which took place in Vienna at the beginning of April 2025. It brought together the heads of the Order of Malta’s relief organisations from around the world.
In addition to the Order of Malta’s Special Ambassador for Combating Human Trafficking, H.E. Ambassador Michel Veuthey, the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Republic of Austria, H.E. Sebastian Prince von Schoenaich-Carolath, spoke about global connections and the role that Austria can play in effectively combating this crime against humanity.
In his much-noticed statement, he emphasised the importance of cooperation with the authorities and government agencies, which are often poorly informed about the extent of Human Trafficking. Many reduce the problem to other parts of the world and hardly perceive how much European countries are also involved.
As a financial expert, Ambassador Schoenaich-Carolath also emphasised the importance of money laundering in connection with Human Trafficking. In particular, where alternative payment systems, such as cryptocurrencies, are transferred into real money, there are starting points for catching human trafficking organisations.
In conclusion, the ambassador highlighted the achievements in the fight against Human Trafficking in Austria, which have been made in cooperation with the Archbishop of Salzburg. Further information in this regard will be made public in the near future.
